What happened

A two-company Romanian consortium paid bribes to the mayor of the municipality of Iași. In return it got the tender win and the signed contract for the city's traffic management system, with 10% of the contract promised. Payment came as cash deposited into one consortium member's account, invoices for works not performed, and benefits in kind: electronics, accommodation in China and hotel discounts. The mayor was finally sentenced on 5 August 2020 by the Bucharest Court of Appeal to 5 years in prison.
